Marbair’s Must-Read Books!

Lately my Friday nights have been consumed with watching Masterchef Juniors. I have never watched any cooking shows and don’t usually get hooked on these TV competitions but the skills that these children have and the amazing meals that they so confidently cook have become my new obsession. Yep, that’s right, my Friday nights are spent watching 8-13 year olds attempt complicated recipes while being kindly barked at by Gordon Ramsay. This week though, Friday night also included a glass of wine, a bowl of popcorn and a really great book!

If reading is a hobby than I have one hobby. I love reading! I will attempt to read just about any book that is recommended but I’ll admit I’m more of a fan of Biographies, Memoirs and anything Chick-Lit! I’ve been hearing the buzz about the TV show “ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK” and like any avid reader, I vowed that I needed to read the book Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison
before I could watch the show. I picked up my copy on Tuesday and I was hooked. The story is simple, it’s a one year of one woman’s life but it’s the year she spent in jail. Her story isn’t extraordinary, she’s just an ordinary girl who made a really bad decision but I think that’s what keeps you engaged, it could happen to you! If being a drug trafficker was your bad decision but you know what I mean. It’s a story that you may not be able to relate to but it’s a woman that you would probably be friends with and you want to hear her story. I looked forward to my daily commute on the subway so that I could read the book. It’s a short memoir and by Friday afternoon, I only had a few chapters left.

Since I wanted nothing more than to know how her final months in jail went, I was in PJ’s by 8 and in bed by 9. Of course, I had to watch Masterchef Juniors first and I don’t have a TV in my room or I would have been in bed at 8. I was sad to finish the book as I wanted to know what happened after she was released. I won’t provide any spoilers but I did try looking her up online to learn more. It’s been awhile since I felt so consumed in a book and can’t wait to watch the TV show and see the characters come to life. ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK is definitely a Must-Read. It’s also the inspiration for a list that I’ll call Marbair’s Must-Read Books! People are always asking me what I’m reading, usually because I’m asking them first but now I can keep track of the books I love through this blog that also keeps track of life as it happens! See 2 purposes, 1 blog! Stay tuned for more Marbair’s Must-Read Books!

  1. I can’t wait until you watch the series! You liked the book? I hadn’t heard great things, so I haven’t read it yet. Maybe I’ll have to borrow your copy 😉
PS – Love the new look!

    • Thanks Jenn, Still playing around with the look so there might be more changes!
I’m sure the book isn’t as glamorous as the show but that’s what I liked about it. She didn’t make up any glamour, she was very straight-forward, I think that people that watch the show first will be disappointed because I saw that there is a lot more drama to the story but it’s still a great read!

  2. I didn’t know there was a book OR that it the tv show was based on a memoir. I have seen a few episodes but haven’t watched in a while since I was so consumed with watching breaking bad.

    • If you enjoyed the few episodes you watched, it’s worth a read to compare. It’s an easy book to fly through. I heard breaking bad is really good. I’m adding it to my Must-Read TV list!
